Pimples appear when oil glands (sabaceous glands) become clogged with increased oil production showing skin-color bumps (whiteheads), black open bumps (blackheads), or red inflammatory bumps (pimples).

Skin pores distributed on the face originally have well-developed oil glands.

Skin-color bumps (whiteheads)

Whiteheads form when the oil glands clog with increased oil production.

Red inflammatory bumps (pimples)

Pimples form when trapped oil in a gland causes an increase of bacteria, leading to inflammation.
